Fresh produce report 25 August

Most vegetable and salad lines are in plentiful supply at the Brisbane Produce Market due to the continued good weather in the growing regions.

Expect to see bargains on cauliflower, broccoli and some excellent quality fennel in stores.

Capsicums and corn are not as well supplied but are reasonably priced.

There are a wide variety of quality tomatoes still on offer.

Lettuce and avocados are also in plentiful supply. Watermelon is scarce, particularly the seedless variety.

However, North Queensland papaw is still tasty and well supplied. Mangoes are through their first flush and will be a bit scarce for the next fortnight before the second flush of fruit is due.

Strawberry quality is still nice and they are in plentiful supply.

Both Cavendish and Lady Finger bananas are in medium supply and should carry a higher shelf price than previous weeks.

Watch out for Australian-grown white minindee seedless grapes from this week.

They will soon be joined by US imported grapes within the fortnight. Tamarillos, better known as bush or tree tomatoes, are now in season.

This sub-tropical fruit is more diverse than a tomato and can be used in chutney, dips, salads and sauces.
