About QKFN
Queensland Kids Fresh Net (QKFN) is a comprehensive promotional and educational program designed to increase the awareness and consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables by primary school-aged children. Brisbane Markets Limited license the Fresh for Kids program from Sydney Markets Limited and have developed extra elements to suit Queensland schools.
Teachers from schools in Queensland can register their schools for FREE and gain access to:
- Posters
- Colourful seasonality guides and recipe brochures
- Bookmarks, tattoos, stickers and other materials
- Either a class tour of the Brisbane Produce Market or a visit from a QKFN team member to your school (within a 1 hour radius of the Brisbane CBD only for school visits)
- Use of the F & V Gang characters
- The opportunity to use the Fresh for Kids and Market Fresh Young Explorer websites as a teaching and learning tool about fruit and vegetables and healthy lifestyles.
The campaign is themed around the 'F & V Gang', fix bright and colourful fruit characters that have been specially designed to appeal to primary school aged children. The main thrust of the program is to promote fruit and vegetables as 'fun' and 'cool'.
The QKFN program also includes for registered schools:
- A tuckshop promotional incentive campaign.
- Tuckshop education materials including the 'Canteen Fresh' brochures, which are designed to provide tuckshop managers with seasonal ideas and information to help them increase sales of fresh produce.

Brisbane Markets school tours
The Brisbane Produce Market is an environment alive with activity and colourful fresh fruit and vegetables. A school visit to the Markets is a great way for children of all ages to learn about different and unusual types of fruit and vegetables, get a better understanding of how it makes the journey from the farm and onto their plates at home, and to see a vibrant market economy in action.
Guidelines and requirements
Please read the following information before requesting a school tour of the Brisbane Markets.
- To book a school tour of the Brisbane Markets please download the booking form and fax it to Brisbane Markets on 07 3379 4903.
- School tours of the Brisbane Markets are open to students in Years 1 - 12.
- School tours of the Brisbane Markets are only available for schools registered in the Brisbane Markets Queensland Kids Fresh Net (QKFN) Program. To join this free program fill out the QKFN registration form and fax it back to the Brisbane Markets on 07 3379 4903.
- Due to limited resources every school in the QKFN program can choose to visit the Brisbane Markets for a tour OR have the Apples Ain't Apples presentation at their school (limited to schools within a one-hour driving distance of the Brisbane Markets). Availability is not guaranteed and bookings are made on a first-come-first-serve basis and subject to approval by Brisbane Markets.
- Due to safety and operational restrictions, the group size for school tours is limited to no more than 50 students.
- We require approximately one adult per four students to accompany tours for students in Years 1 - 3 and approximately one adult per five students to accompany tours for students in Years 4 - 7.
- Please include the details of any particular areas of study or topics you would like the tour to cover on the booking form. We will endeavour to incorporate this information into the tour if possible.
- School tours of the Brisbane Markets take approximately one hour.
- Trading starts early in the morning at Brisbane Markets. In order for students to see the Markets in action, tours start at approximately 9.00am during winter trading hours (May-October) and 8.30am during summer trading hours (November - April).
- On arrival at the main gate of the Brisbane Markets (Sherwood Road, Rocklea), ask your driver to turn left and pull over near "Site Services". A Market Officer will instruct the driver where to park. Click here for directions to the Brisbane Markets and to download a site map.
- A Brisbane Markets Market Officer will accompany school tours for safety and security.
- All Brisbane Markets Marketing and Communications staff hold Blue Cards issued by The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian.
- School tours of the Brisbane Markets are provided by Brisbane Markets to eligible schools free of charge as part of the QKFN Program.

Apples ain't Apples presentation - Years 2 - 4
As a part of the QKFN program, registered schools within a one (1) hour radius of the Brisbane Markets (at Rocklea) may request for the QKFN team to visit their school and give a presentation on fruit and vegetables.
The presentation is suitable for children from Year 2 to 4 and covers the following areas:
- The amount of fruit and vegetables they should eat each day
- Nutritional content of fruit and vegetables, the difference between fruit and vegetables,
- Different parts of the plant that fruit and vegetables come from
- How fresh produce travels from paddock to plate through the Central Market System
- A guessing game where students are shown and asked to name interesting and unusual fruits and vegetables
- Apple taste testing of three different varieties
- A visit from one of the Brisbane Markets fruity characters (fruity character subject to availability).

- The Brisbane Markets Apples Ain't Apples presentation is designed for students in Years 2, 3 and 4. Bookings for students outside these age groups will not be accepted.
The Apples Ain't Apples presentation is only available for schools registered in the Brisbane Markets QKFN Program. To join this free program fill out the QKFN registration form and fax it to Brisbane Markets on 07 3379 4903.
- Due to limited resources, every school in the QKFN program can choose to have the Apples Ain't Apples presentation at their school OR visit the Brisbane Markets for a tour. Availability is not guaranteed and bookings are made on a first-come-first-serve basis and subject to approval by Brisbane Markets.
- Due to limited resources, the presentation is only available to schools within a one-hour driving distance of the Brisbane Markets (Rocklea) and for one visit per school, per year.
- The group size is limited to no more than 100 students. The Brisbane Markets presenter may cancel the presentation on arrival if additional students over the number nominated on the booking form are present on the day.
- The presentation takes approximately 45 - 60 minutes, depending on the size of the group.
- Only one Apples Ain't Apples presentation will be given per school visit.
- The presenter will require access to a whiteboard.
- To include a character appearance the school will need to provide a "volunteer" to wear the costume (for example a responsible Year 7 student), a minder to assist the character volunteer and a place to change into the character costume that cannot be seen by the students participating in the presentation.
- The school will need to supply a person to cut up apples for the taste testing at the end of the presentation. Brisbane Markets will supply the apples, cutting board, knife and containers.
- Please inform your front office staff to expect the QKFN presentor and where the presentation will be held.
- All presenters from the Brisbane Markets staff hold Blue Cards issued by The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian.
- The Apples Ain't Apples presentation is provided by Brisbane Markets to eligible schools free of charge as part of the QKFN Program.
