Future plans and development

Brisbane Markets future-plans-and-development

BML has exciting plans for the future and looks forward to working with industry stakeholders in pursuing our vision for the successful development and operation of the Brisbane Markets.  While the Master Planning process and Southgate Industrial Precint projects are moving ahead, there are a number of other ongoing projects underway.

Infrastructure upgrades

BML continues to focus on infrastructure upgrade and maintenance projects in a range of areas across the Brisbane Markets to improve the function, operation and safety of the site.

Arguably the most significant issue looming over businesses in south east Queensland is the drought and lack of water storage infrastructure. With the cooperation of tenants, BML has met its Level 5 water reduction targets (a 25% reduction). As one of the region's top 100 water users, BML has prepared and submitted a Water Efficiency Management Plan (WEMP) as part of its compliance with water restrictions.

There will be an additional focus to address any issues with the telecommunications infrastructure in the immediate future, ensuring that essential services being provided by BML to Market users are of a sufficient standard to promote efficient business operations on the site.

Increasing operating efficiencies

Through our proactive approach to site and business development, BML will help the Brisbane Markets retain its status as a leader in the adoption of technology and best practice business processes. Market developments will incorporate world-class technology to address the enhancement of cool chain management issues, and BML will continue to support our customers by providing support and infrastructure to address food safety issues. We are committed to enhancing the operation of the Markets and facilities available within the Commercial Centre to support and achieve operating efficiencies for all tenants.

A stronger industry for all

BML is committed to continuing its pro-active approach to industry development. In keeping with this commitment, our future plans focus on the following:

  • Maintaining a strong Central Market.
  • Enhancement of the industry alliances formed to date.
  • The provision of facilities to encourage both a strong domestic and export market for fresh produce.
  • Seeking new and expanded markets for product in Australia and overseas.

Communications and promotions

BML is committed to working with industry stakeholders and customers to achieve a strong, united and vital industry for all. A key part of our communications focus will be continuing to work with and establish relationships with key stakeholders and customer groups. Our strategic communications objectives also incorporate the promotion of the Market and fresh fruit and vegetables to encourage support for the Markets and increased consumption of product.

BML is also committed in ensuring the best possible outcome for industry as a whole is achieved in relation to the development of the mandatory Horticulture Code of Conduct. BML will continue to provide a view to all levels of government and the media to ensure a fair outcome for all.
