Supplying the Markets

supplying-the-markets

This is a handy guide designed to help growers find, then form a successful partnership with a Brisbane Markets Wholesaler. Similarly, our Wholesalers seek good, long-term partnerships with growers who can be relied upon to consistently produce a quality product. Here are some handy steps to follow:

Selecting a Wholesaler

1. Find out who specialises in your product

  • Visit the Wholesaler/Product Match section
  • Alternatively, email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call the 1800 631 002 Market Hotline and BML will email, fax or post a list of Wholesalers who specialise in particular product lines

2. Speak with other growers and contact your local growers' association for advice.

3. Make a short-list of potential Wholesaler partners, speak with them directly and, if possible, visit their facilities and see their operations first-hand.

4. Check that they are members of Wholesaler industry organisation Brismark, and check their credentials with Brismark. You can contact Brismark on the Market Hotline by phoning 1800 631 002 or phone direct on 07 3379 3061.

5. Agree on how you will do business and write it down.

  • Be clear on your requirements
  • Understand their requirements and services
  • Ask about food safety/quality assurance
  • Determine how often and by what method you will communicate
  • Decide on terms and arrangements for payments
  • Agree on what happens if your produce is spoilt or if there is a problem

6. From your short-list, select a Wholesaler who best meets your requirements and who you feel most comfortable with.

Maintaining a Successful Partnership

A few simple procedures can help you get a good return:

  • Advise the transporter/s details and estimated time of arrival when you send your product. Faxing a copy of the consignment note helps.
  • Accurately grade and describe your product.
  • Use reliable transporters who can get your produce to the Market on time and in good condition.
  • Visit your Wholesaler at least once a season. While you are there, have a look around the selling floor to compare your product with the competition.
  • Keep up to date records of your transactions and immediately flag any payment issues with your Wholesaler should they arise.
  • Listen to your Wholesaler's advice and be prepared to accept constructive criticism.
  • If you have a concern, discuss it with your Wholesaler.

Disputes

Miscommunication seems to be the most common cause of disputes because most arise from a misunderstanding or an assumption. For this reason:

  • Make sure your Wholesaler communicates with you regularly and you communicate with them.
  • When you are talking price, make sure you clarify if it is the return price and not the selling price or market price so that you know how much you can expect to earn.
  • If you have a disagreement with your Wholesaler, raise it with them. If possible, speak to the owner of the business.
  • If this fails, call the Brisbane Markets Grower Complaints Hotline
